10th Annual Sizia Bidar Festival Another Success for Tricity Futsal Academy

Sizdah Bedar, also known as Nature's Day, is a joyful Persian tradition, a day of music, food, and fun that is held on the thirteenth day of Nowruz which is the Persian New Year. Story by LJI reporter Geoff Scott.

According to some Iranians’ belief the number thirteen is ominous. Sizdah Bedar, therefore, means "getting rid of the ominous of the day thirteen". Going on a picnic in the heart of nature and natural places is one way to do so. According to the Dehkhoda Dictionary, "dar" means "valley and plain" and "be" means "towards". Thus "Sizdah Bedar" means "towards the valley on the thirteenth day".

For the past ten years the Tricity Futsal Academy has been putting on a Sizdah Bedar picnic event at Gates Park in Port Coquitlam.

This year was no exception. On March 30 hundreds came out to enjoy mini soccer games for kids, dodge ball and tug of war competitions, as well as a talent show, dance competition, and a little community theatre.

As the event organizers were Tricity Futsal Academy, there was also a more formal soccer tournament held for all Tricity Futsal Academy members on the adjoining field. At the end of the soccer tournament awards were handed out to all of the participants.

Everyone is welcome to come out to Sizdah Bedar to celebrate life, games, music, culture, and togetherness! It's hoped that more of the Tri-Cities community will come out to take part at the eleventh annual Sizdah Bedar event next year. Bring your own barbaque if you wish.
