Angie Peters' “Just Act: We Are the Solution to Poverty” Book Launch

As CEO of the Yonge Street Mission (YSM) for 16 years, Angie Peters brings a unique perspective to the social service sector, having transitioned from a career in telecommunications and founding her social enterprise, ZOE Alliance. Her dedication to alleviating poverty is deeply personal, rooted in her own experiences with childhood poverty. Angie leads a team of 140 staff and over 3,500 volunteers, working alongside strategic partners to achieve a shared vision for Toronto. She also actively participates in initiatives aimed at systemic change while pursuing a master’s degree in leadership.
On May 29, 2024, Angie launched her book, “JUST ACT: We Are the Solution to Poverty,” at Daniels Spectrum, Ada Slaight Hall. This inspirational guide empowers individuals, businesses, and community organizations concerned about poverty but uncertain about how to effect change. Built on insights from those with lived experiences of poverty, the book answers critical questions, shares true stories, highlights effective initiatives, and addresses barriers to success. It offers a step-by-step process to develop a one-year action plan that can transform lives for generations.
During the launch, Angie invited three speakers from different perspectives on poverty: Wilson Yang, Franchise Owner of Chick-Fil-A; Robert Hylton, Entrepreneur and Lived Experience Leader; and Akosua Alagaratnam. They shared personal stories about how poverty had impacted their lives.
Angie’s book outlines strategies for those wanting to help, including understanding what poverty looks like today, identifying needs, leveraging influence, and contributing time and money. These components, when applied to individual needs, can significantly alleviate poverty.
The Toronto downtown east area is a microcosm of urban life, featuring both high-income earners and low-income residents. It houses many social service agencies like Fred Victor, Dixon Hall, and the Yonge Street Mission. Founded in the late 19th century by Christian groups to combat poverty, YSM has evolved to offer a wide range of services. Today, it supports street-involved youth, adults, and families with mental health, employment, housing services, and a food bank. Located at 310 Gerard St. E, YSM plays a crucial role in the Regent Park revitalization, engaging with the Social Development Plan’s working groups.
