Aria Savings: A Financial Resource for the Farsi-Speaking Community

Vancouver’s Persian-speaking community celebrated the launch of Ariasavings, a financial institution designed to meet their unique cultural and economic needs. Spearheaded by Mehran AazamiFard, a banking professional with over three decades of experience, the initiative reflects a growing recognition of the importance of culturally sensitive services in Canada’s multicultural cities.

Mehran AazamiFard shared her personal journey, which began as a refugee before settling in Canada. She recounted her early struggles with navigating the banking system and the challenges newcomers face in understanding credit systems and opening accounts in a foreign language. Her career, which spans years in both major Canadian banks and credit unions, became a foundation for her vision: creating a financial institution that bridges these gaps for Persian-speaking immigrants.

“I saw how difficult it was for people like me, arriving with limited English and no familiarity with Canadian banking,” AazamiFard said. “I wanted to create a space where language and culture are not barriers to financial independence.”

Community Celebration and Diverse Voices:

The launch event brought together leaders from various fields, highlighting Ariasavings' broader significance. Linda Buchanan, Mayor of North Vancouver, emphasized the institution’s role in fostering inclusivity:

“Ariasavings is more than a financial institution; it’s a bridge that connects newcomers to opportunities while celebrating their cultural heritage.”

Phillip Legg, a financial strategist, spoke about the economic value of culturally focused banking. Mike Schilling, President and CEO of Community Savings Credit Union, noted during his remarks:

“This is a shining example of how inclusivity in financial services can strengthen our communities and create lasting change.”

Beyond Banking: A Cultural Hub

Ariasavings is not merely a financial institution; it is envisioned as a cultural hub. AazamiFard spoke of incorporating Nowruz and Yalda traditions into the banking space, from decorating branches with Haft-Sin tables to celebrating these events with clients. This approach, she said, goes beyond financial services, creating a sense of belonging for clients who often feel isolated in a new country.

The institution is also a testament to the resilience of the Persian-speaking community in Vancouver. AazamiFard recalled the early days of organizing cultural events like Nowruz and Chaharshanbeh Suri with limited resources. Today, those efforts have blossomed into thriving traditions embraced by a growing community.

Filling a Gap in the Community:

The core mission of Ariasavings is to address the needs of Persian-speaking newcomers, including Iranians, Afghans, and Tajiks. While many financial institutions operate in Vancouver, the language and cultural barriers they pose can make accessing services challenging for newcomers. Ariasavings seeks to remove these obstacles, offering a space where customers can communicate in their native language and feel understood on a deeper level.

A Vision for the Future

As Vancouver’s Persian-speaking community continues to grow, Ariasavings aims to evolve alongside it. Future plans include expanding its services, offering tailored financial literacy programs, and strengthening ties with local cultural organizations. The goal is to help clients navigate the financial system and empower them to thrive economically and socially in their new home.

By combining financial expertise with cultural awareness, Ariasavings sets a precedent for how institutions can serve diverse communities in Canada. It is both an economic resource and a symbol of belonging, reflecting the resilience and aspirations of Persian-speaking immigrants in Vancouver.
