Bridging Cultures: Gina Chong's Journey to create ways to overcome Anti-Asian Racism in BC's Tri-Cities
In this episode of Face to Face, Gina Chong talks about what inspired her to create organizations to counter the Anti-Asian antipathy during the Covid lockdown.
In the wake of rising racial tensions during the Covid-19 pandemic, Gina Chong emerged as a catalyst for change, driven by a passion to foster unity and celebrate diversity. She founded the Tri-Cities Asian Art & Culture Society and she became the visionary behind the Dumplings Festival. Chong's journey is rooted in a desire to combat racism and build bridges between communities.
The inception of the Tri-Cities Asian Art & Culture Society was created in response to a disturbing incident in May 2021. A video circulating media channels depicted a racially motivated incident targeting Asians. In response, Chong felt compelled to establish a platform that not only countered stereotypes but also celebrated the rich tapestry of Asian culture. This commitment materialized in the form of her society that provided a space for artistic expression and cultural exchange.
Her transformative journey continued with her photography project and the inaugural Dumplings Festival in May 2022. A culinary delight, the festival showcased the cultural significance of dumplings, attracting a diverse audience. However, the overwhelming success came with a challenge – vendors running out of dumplings, a testament to the festival's popularity and the power of shared experiences.
Central to Chong's ethos is the commitment to cultural inclusivity in all events organized by the society. From curated art exhibitions to vibrant performances, each initiative is designed to bridge gaps and create an environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging.
Chong draws inspiration from her personal experiences, shaping the mission of the society and influencing her future goals. In a candid exploration, she shares the profound impact of racism on her journey, emphasizing the importance of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
For those facing racist comments, Chong offers a compelling take-home message. Through her work, she exemplifies the strength derived from community support and the transformative power of cultural celebration, turning adversity into an opportunity to bring people together. From racist comments to a thriving cultural celebration, Gina Chong's narrative is one of resilience, hope, and the enduring spirit of unity.
