Building Supportive Networks for Children with Disabilities in Vancouver
Raising awareness about autism and disabilities is a crucial civic issue in North Vancouver, as it directly impacts the inclusivity and well-being of children and families in the community. The need for accessible services, support networks, and an understanding of the unique challenges faced by families of children with disabilities is essential to creating a more inclusive society.
Sherry Soltani – Local Journalism Initiative
Ensuring that all children, regardless of ability, have the opportunity to thrive is not just a personal concern for affected families, but a collective responsibility for the entire community.
Sherry invited Mandy Young, President of the BC Prader-Willi Syndrome Association, to share her journey as a parent of a child with a disability. Mandy’s experience has driven her to support other families, advocating for better access to services and resources in North Vancouver. She discussed the challenges of accessing therapy and special education in Vancouver, while also highlighting the importance of community support networks that empower parents to navigate these hurdles.
As a culturally diverse city, Mandy emphasized that services must be responsive to the various backgrounds of families. She called for improvements in schools and public services to be more inclusive of children with disabilities.
In her conclusion, Sherry thanked Mandy for her invaluable insights and underscored the importance of collective community effort. She encouraged everyone to continue advocating for the needs of children with disabilities and work toward a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.
