The Children’s Book Bank Relocates to the Daniels Spectrum.

By Korbin Milo

The Children’s Book Bank has faithfully served the communities of Downtown Toronto East since 2007. Now nestled in the heart of Regent Park, the Children’s book bank is happy to have already met some community members since their grand opening in February. The Children’s Book Bank encourages the public “to take away as many books as you like.”

The Book Bank is an invaluable resource available to families, school groups, and teen readers aged 12-18. The book bank is unique in that each person can select a book for themselves or a young reader in their life, and come back as many times as they wish. Children and youth can build libraries at home that cater to their interests. The atmosphere within the book bank is playful and light. The carefully curated colours, shapes, and stuffed literary characters invite each visitor into the delightfully skylit space. The community can access the book bank at the Daniels Spectrum building at 585 Dundas Street East from the second floor.

The Children’s Book Bank is open for community drop-in each Tuesday to Thursday from 10am to 6pm, and on Saturdays from 10am-3pm. Storytime for Students have bookable slots available for school groups up to age 12 Mondays and Fridays. For more information on programming or to book a storytime please visit childrensbookbank.com or email info@childrensbookbank.com or call them at 416-922-7323.

They have also recently opened their new warehouse space at 561 Sherbourne Street. The loading dock can be accessed via Bleecker street.

FOCUS Media Arts Centre (FOCUS) is a not-for-profit organization that was established in 1990 to counter negative media stereotypes of low income communities and provide relevant information to residents living in the Regent Park area and surrounding communities.

We seek to empower marginalized individuals and under represented communities to have a voice, through the  use of professional training, mentorships and participatory based media practices that enable the sharing of stories, experiences and perspectives on relevant matters and issues. In brief our mandate is to empower marginalized individuals and under-serviced communities to have a voice and tell their own stories.
