Citizens of Montreal North want to make youth and elders a priority

Montreal North held a council meeting addressing community concerns, including how to support youth and seniors in Montreal North, community services, driving limits and the cutting down of trees in the neighbourhood.

The Youth Priority Action Plan (Plan d'action priorite jeunesse) was put to the slowed down before the pandemic, in 2017. Concerned citizens said the consequences of the pandemic were harsh on the youth of Montreal Nord and expressed that after 5 years of its absence, the borough needs to return this project.

The borough said the plan will be continued and adapted to the new realities of the pandemic/post-pandemic period. 

The borough is also planning to create a senior citizens council in order to reach and connect with the elders that are living in isolation and with no socialization in Montreal Nord. This plan is prioritized before a potential intergeneration council between both seniors and youth. The council said this will most likely be intergenerational events.

Concern over fire arms and gang activity was vocalized by a concerned citizen, asking about socio-community team équipe de quartier. The teams are smaller, but still around. The Carmine team (SPVM agents) are in contact with the youth for security matters.

Some citizens voiced their concern of the rate at which the borough had been cutting down trees,

The council said there are lot of efforts are put to protect the trees in Montreal Nord, but inspections are getting harder to fulfill. However, fines will be given and their amount have increased as an incentive.

The council also discussed driving limits and other methods of supporting youth and seniors in Montreal North.
