Empowering Youth Through Volunteerism

In British Columbia, volunteering plays an important role in youth development, offering a path to personal growth and future career success.

Samira Gholami, a volunteer TV host and advocate for youth education, recently discussed the benefits of volunteering with Yazdan Khansari, an 11th-grade student and youth leader who has participated in numerous volunteer activities and youth leadership programs.

Yazdan emphasized the transformative power of volunteering and the passion it can ignite. He shared, “Through volunteering and real-life experiences, I’ve discovered my strengths in problem-solving, conflict resolution, and leadership. It’s important to remember that as volunteers, we aren’t expected to do everything perfectly. We’re learning, and having mentors can greatly support our growth.”

Yazdan highlighted how volunteering offers practical experience and skills relevant to future careers. He advised new immigrant youth and parents to get involved in volunteer work to find new opportunities and passions for a better future. “I wouldn’t know what I know about myself today if I hadn’t participated in the youth leadership program and volunteer work,” he said.

He encouraged young people to step out of their comfort zones, noting that this leads to personal growth and self-discovery.

Samira asked Yazdan why volunteering is important for young people today. Yazdan responded that volunteering allows young individuals to explore various career paths, providing clarity on their future aspirations and interests. He emphasized that for new immigrants, volunteering is crucial as it offers more than just a good GPA; it can significantly enhance career and university admission prospects.

Samira also asked Yazdan what he would recommend to young people who have concerns about getting involved in volunteering. Yazdan replied that taking risks and trying new opportunities are essential for growth. Samira agreed, adding, “If you don’t try, you won’t lose anything compared to your current situation. So, it’s better to seize the opportunity.”

Yazdan also highlighted the importance and impact of volunteering on youth development.

In summary, Samira and Yazdan’s conversation underscored that volunteering is a crucial avenue for young people to gain valuable skills, explore career options, and achieve personal growth. Working together, we can foster a community where youth are empowered to thrive.
