First EOHU Press Briefing of 2021
---------------------------------------------------------------
On Tuesday the 5th January 2021, Dr Paul Roumelitotis, of the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) returned to speak to the press for the first time since prior to Christmas. Dr Roumeliotis explained that the trend on positive case of COVID-19 is still very high across Ontario, Canada and the world.
Cases in Ontario are starting to level out with approximately 3000 new cases per day, most of which coming from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), however the positive case numbers are starting to increase in Ottawa too as the Capital reported triple figures on Monday. Multiple health units in Ontario, including the EOHU, find themselves well above the "red" zone suggesting that the current "lockdown" is still needed.
In Prescott-Russell there are currently 213 active cases and the 7-day rolling average is starting to stabilize, though the figures don't represent all the potential transition to have occurred over Christmas and New Year yet. Dr Roumneliotis also announced that the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine will be available in the region as of next week with 1200 thawed doses to be administered following the provincial guidelines (Long Term Care staff & Essential Visitors followed by Health Care workers).
These 1200 doses will be delivered from Ottawa but, going forward, the Pfizer vaccine will be delivered to the Hawkesbury General Hospital where they will be stored. The Moderna and other vaccines will be available shortly.
Five vaccination sites for long term care staff will be announced imminently as well as a pilot transport project in order to provide vaccinations to people in long term care as well. Currently, the EOHU plans to give the general population access to the vaccine from March/April through "mass immunization clinics" and at Family Doctors Clinics and Pharmacies.
Though they are both administered in 2 doses, the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine roll outs will differ slightly. As Pfizer has established a reliable chain of supply for each 1000 doses received 1000 vaccinations will occur. But with the Moderna vaccine, for now, the EOHU will take a slightly more cautious approach by vaccinating 500 people per 1000 doses received.
Primary School children are still currently due to be sent back to school next week even though Dr Roumelotis said he was slightly on the fence about the decision. Currently the lockdown in Eastern Ontario is due to end on the 23rd January though that could change if the number of new cases doesn't diminish.
