Gender-Based Violence and Cultural Taboos, Addressing Sexual Violence in Our Community

On January 23, 2025, a collaborative seminar on addressing sexual violence took place at the Coquitlam Public Library. This impactful civic event, organized in partnership with the Women’s Association of Yaran, Skyrise Media Society, Parvaz TV, and Middle Peace Society, aimed to raise awareness and provide culturally informed solutions for gender-based violence (GBV). he seminar highlighted the urgent need to address the hidden and often unspoken dimensions of GBV, fostered community engagement, and emphasized the importance of creating safer spaces for all. The evening began with a land acknowledgment by Mahrokh Ghaffarimehr, setting a respectful and reflective tone for the meaningful discussions that followed.

Poran Poregbal, a Volunteer Host and Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC), and trauma specialist, focused her presentation on the experiences of Iranian women facing GBV. Highlighting a lack of research on GBV's effects on Farsi-speaking immigrant women, she stressed the need for more inclusive studies. Drawing from a recent French case of marital rape, she remarked, “Gender-based violence transcends borders and cultures; it’s a pervasive issue that demands attention everywhere.” Using frameworks like the Johari Window, she provided insights into the often-hidden and unspoken dynamics of violence and its profound psychological, familial, and societal impacts.

Samira Gholami, a Volunteer Host and Registered Therapeutic Counsellor (RTC), explored the cultural and migration-related challenges surrounding GBV within Iranian communities. She pointed out how deeply ingrained taboos and limited awareness discourage victims from seeking help. Gholami stated, “The key is teaching children how to protect themselves and report violence if it occurs.” She proposed practical, culturally tailored solutions, such as early education programs and community resources that support Iranian-Canadian families.

The seminar featured a lively and engaged Q&A session, highlighting the audience's concerns and interest in actionable solutions. One attendee asked, “What resources are available for victims of violence in our community?” Another shared a personal concern, saying, “My grandson is being bullied at school—what steps can I take to help him?” The speakers provided thoughtful and practical advice, emphasizing trauma-informed practices, advocacy, and the importance of creating supportive networks for both victims of violence and families navigating challenges like bullying. Audience engagement demonstrated a strong desire for more conversations and resources around these pressing issues, making the event a meaningful step toward fostering safety and awareness in the community.
