Good Day from the Bay: McGuire Chocolate Company & the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

In a recent episode of Good Day from the Bay, hosts Vicki Hogarth and Jonathan Brittain took viewers on a journey through Southwest New Brunswick, spotlighting local artisans and celebrating the 10th anniversary of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. This episode offered a blend of community stories, local craftsmanship, and a heartfelt tribute to an important cause.

The show opened with a visit to the McGuire Chocolate Company in St. Andrews, where Mark McGuire, co-founder of the company, guided viewers through the intricate process of chocolate-making. From selecting cacao beans to the roasting and grinding process, Mark emphasized the craftsmanship behind every bar.

Mark shared how his journey into chocolate-making began during a backpacking trip in Central America, where he first encountered cacao beans. His curiosity led him to explore the craft, eventually establishing the McGuire Chocolate Company with his wife, Victoria. The couple's commitment to using simple, high-quality ingredients has earned them international recognition.

The show then shifted to the 10th anniversary of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Victoria McGuire shared her connection to the cause, revealing that her mother had been diagnosed with ALS and passed away in 2022. To mark the anniversary, Vicki and Jonathan took part in the challenge, braving ice-cold water on the St. Andrews wharf. Vicki and Jonathan then playfully challenged St. Andrews Mayor Brad Henderson to join in, keeping the community spirit alive.

The episode wrapped up by celebrating local milestones, including anniversaries for residents and notable institutions like Roosevelt Campobello International Park and Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre, both of which are celebrating their 60th anniversary in 2024.

Through stories of local artisans and heartfelt tributes, this episode of Good Day from the Bay exemplified the value of community television, leaving viewers with both inspiration and a sense of connection to their neighbours.
