How Can We Be More Sustainable?

In this episode, the group 4GetAboutIt from the Focus Media Arts Centre, hosts; Saima Islam and Jamelia Parnell speak on the catastrophic events that are currently affecting in the world. The youth who work on this project are all Regent Park residents, the themes of their programs represent the perspective of young people from the community - giving a voice to youth from the area allows them delve into the nature of civic engagement and political analysis. The hosts give their opinions on the situation and how people could create a more sustainable environment.

Host Saima starts off by discussing the scientists in over 25 countries, protesting on climate change, warning government to seek change before facing more serious issues by 2025. Both Saima and Jamellia feel afraid of the future knowing that 2025 seems so soon and that things are going to become worse if we don’t begin to take action.

Saima then continues to talk about the Harvard experiment where students attempted to release dust in the air to dim the brightness of the sun, claiming that the brightness from the sun shines on glaciers emitting heat that breaks down the ozone layer. Saima further speaks on wealthier people like Kylie Jenner, who‘s able to afford excessive waste things for special events but doesn’t consider helping the planet by using disposable products.

Both then talk about recent high gas prices. Car dealer have produced electrical cars creating less emission polluting into the air. As they seem more sustainable, it’s hard for most individuals to afford.

They continue the conversation by providing everyday solutions that aren’t expensive. Saima and Jamellia continue the conversation by providing everyday solutions to create small changes to the planet by using items that don’t produce too much waste. Examples like reusable straws, reusable menstrual products, and reusable water bottles, can release less waste than it normally pollutes.

We seek to empower marginalized individuals and under represented communities to have a voice, through the  use of professional training, mentorships and participatory based media practices that enable the sharing of stories, experiences and perspectives on relevant matters and issues. In brief our mandate is to empower marginalized individuals and under-serviced communities to have a voice and tell their own stories.
