Isabella Gamk: A Legacy of Courage in the Face of Toronto's Housing Crisis and Ableism

Isabella Gamk's journey is a profound testament to resilience, courage, and unwavering advocacy, particularly within Toronto's Downtown East and the vibrant Regent Park community. Beginning her transition at age 56, Isabella has not only embraced her identity as a transgender woman but has also become a powerful advocate for marginalized voices.

Fred Alvarado – Local Journalism Initiative

As the founder of POOF (Protecting ODSP OW Funding), she has dedicated her life to fighting against poverty and homelessness, challenging ableist demands that hinder access to vital resources and emphasizing the critical importance of social justice and support for those in need.

Her activism is rooted in her personal experiences as a positive HIV survivor, navigating systemic barriers while striving for a better life for herself and others. Isabella's work with POOF has highlighted the challenges faced by those reliant on the Ontario Disability Support Program and Ontario Works, drawing attention to the urgent need for reform and real solutions. Through years of protesting and organizing, she has become a beacon of hope, championing the rights of marginalized communities and advocating for comprehensive solutions to the issues surrounding social housing.

As she prepares for her upcoming Medical Assistance in Dying procedure, Isabella's story encourages us all to reflect on the legacies we leave behind and the impact of love and connection in our lives. Her journey not only resonates within Regent Park but also inspires change on a broader scale, reminding us of the power of advocacy and the importance of fighting for those whose voices often go unheard.

In brief our mandate is to empower marginalized individuals and under-serviced communities to have a voice and tell their own stories.
