Mayor Patrick Johnstone Discusses the Public Affairs of the City of New Westminster

NewWest.TV recently sat down with Mayor Patrick Johnstone to discuss key issues currently at the forefront of City Council’s agenda. The conversation covered three major topics: a new federal grant for crisis response, the recent economic forum, and the role of the arts community in the city’s future.

The City of New Westminster was awarded $1.46 million through Health Canada’s Emergency Treatment Fund, making it the only city in British Columbia to receive funding and securing the second-largest grant in Canada. Out of 300 municipalities that applied, only 65 were selected, highlighting the strength of New Westminster’s approach. The funding will support the city’s crisis response pilot project, which aims to address homelessness, mental health challenges, and substance use issues—problems that are interconnected and affecting cities nationwide. The program is evidence-based, well-researched, and part of a broader effort to provide effective, compassionate solutions for vulnerable populations.

The Mayor also reflected on the city’s recent economic forum, emphasizing its importance as a platform for local businesses to exchange ideas, discuss challenges, and explore new opportunities. In an uncertain economic climate, bringing the business community together to collaborate is crucial for fostering resilience and growth.

The discussion concluded with a focus on the arts community, which plays a vital role in both the economic and social well-being of New Westminster. However, in the face of financial constraints, finding sustainable ways to support artists and cultural organizations remains a challenge. The Mayor acknowledged the need for creative solutions to ensure that the arts continue to thrive, contributing to the vibrancy and identity of the city.

As New Westminster navigates these pressing issues, the City Council remains committed to balancing economic priorities with social responsibility, ensuring that all residents—especially the most vulnerable—receive the support they need.
