Medicine Picking & Identification with Mark Eshkawkogan - September 25th, 2020 - Zhashkwedoons/Mushrooms

In this episode, Mark shows us the different 'zhashkwedoons' (mushrooms) that are springing up on trees and on the forest floor at beginning of autumn. Filmed at the end of September, Mark takes us into the bush around Wiikwemkoong, along with his trusty dog Charming, to see what different mushrooms and other medicines we can find during the fall harvest.

Mark shows us how to 'keep track of the trail', and the importance of orienting yourself in the bush, knowing where you are and where you are going, so as not to get lost. Also, it's good to go into the bush prepared, with your axe and knife, compass, matches, flagging tape, etc.... And it helps to have a dog! Not only does Charming help Mark find his way in the bush, but also helps to keep bears and other animals away.  One should also be mindful of 'chicos' and dead standing trees, which are a hazard in the bush.  Keep your eyes and ears open to potential dangers at all times, but don't forget to have fun!

Mark also would like to remind people to make sure they do their research (online, but also ask elders what they know!) before picking and eating mushrooms. Never eat wild mushrooms that you haven't identified as safe, and always make sure to cook them well first. But as we get ready for another winter, and we stock up on food and medicines while anticipating the possibility of another COVID related lockdown, it's good to have our immune systems boosted, and to have our supplies of chaga and other medicinal plants and mushrooms ready.   Get out into the bush and get some forest therapy!

Nahaaw, miigwetch!
