Miles for Mental Health: Promoting Well-Being Through Awareness and Action
Miles for Mental Health: Advocating for Awareness and Reducing Stigma
Miles for Mental Health in Neepawa is a local charitable organization dedicated to raising awareness about mental health and reducing the stigma surrounding related conversations. Established in 2017 and becoming a registered charity in 2019, the organization has consistently worked to create supportive spaces for mental health advocacy through community engagement.
Before the pandemic, Miles for Mental Health hosted Fun Run events, combining physical activity with mental health advocacy. These events highlighted the critical connection between physical exercise and mental well-being, fostering a supportive environment where participants could engage in meaningful conversations about emotional health.
Adapting Through the Pandemic
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Miles for Mental Health faced significant challenges but remained committed to its mission. NACTV volunteer Don Walmsley interviewed Board President Diane Martin about how the organization adapted to pandemic-related restrictions.
To maintain community connections despite isolation, the organization distributed outreach bags filled with thoughtful items. These bags symbolized care and continuity, reinforcing that even in difficult times, mental health support remained a priority.
As conditions improved, the group resumed community-focused activities. Martin emphasized the team’s resilience and creativity in adapting their programs to ensure continued outreach.
Expanding Community Engagement
"Once we were able to be out in the community more, we partnered with several organizations that align with our mission," Martin shared. One notable initiative is Mom’s Morning Out at ArtsForward, initially held monthly and later expanded to twice a month due to popular demand. Each session features engaging programs such as crafting, yoga, nutrition talks, and discussions on postpartum depression. While mothers participate in these activities, volunteers provide childcare—a vital service fostering both learning and respite.
The organization also collaborates with youth-focused programs like the Girls and Boys Fit Club, promoting mental wellness through physical activity. Additionally, their partnership with Neepawa Men’s Shed supports men’s mental health through hands-on projects and community building.
Looking Ahead
Looking to the future, Martin expressed hopes for increased community participation and more board members joining the cause. "Just because it’s a Miles for Mental Health event doesn’t mean you have a big problem," she explained. "The more open we are about our emotional support needs and mental wellness, the less stigma there will be."
Through advocacy, partnerships, and innovative programming, Miles for Mental Health continues to champion mental health awareness, fostering a community where seeking support is seen as a strength, not a stigma.
