Movember: Growing Awareness for Men's Health especially in BC

In November, in Canada and several other countries, there is an anniversary of a movement called Movember. This movement focuses on men's physical and mental health, encouraging them to pay more attention to themselves. The movement and the attention to men's health have also led government institutions to provide services for men.

Is this movement and the services offered enough to promote men's health?

In this program, we talk with two experts. Dr. Reza Mohaghegh initially points out that male problems have historical roots and are due to the increased responsibilities given to men outside the home. They face greater challenges.

Ms. Azar Zia Manesh says that women can also contribute to the mental health of men. She notes that suicide rates in men are high, and Reza continues that a special helpline will be available this month for companionship and assistance for individuals contemplating suicide.

Reza doesn't believe that men have fewer things to say; rather, they speak less about their problems. In many cases, they resort to drugs or alcohol as a means of escape, and we see the consequences of this in British Columbia. Azar adds that during the post-COVID era, societal health issues, especially men's health, have undergone changes, and we are facing new challenges.

Both guests discuss men's behavioural and social characteristics, and finally, the conversation turns to the centres and resources available in the province, offering special services to men. Azar introduces some of these centres.

Both guests believe that discussing men's issues and problems can be effective, and even this television program is a positive step.
