Navigating the Digital Realm: Insights on Online Security and Technology Awareness

These days, the Canada Revenue Agency warns us to be wary of scammers. During tax-filing season, people may fall victim to online and cyber scammers. Victims often fall for deception due to their unfamiliarity with the online space and their haste to respond. That's why we're connected with an IT specialist Mehrdad Nikkhah.

Mehrdad has studied computer science and technology and worked for years in the field. He currently resides in British Columbia.

At the outset of our discussion, Majid points out that mobile phones and computers have become indispensable parts of people's daily lives. From online shopping to banking and even carrying out daily tasks, everything is done with mobile phones and computers. Majid wonders why modern society has become so reliant on technology.

Mehrdad responds that this reliance is a necessity of modern society. We are advancing, and technology has made our lives easier. However, we must also become more familiar with the tools and resources around us.

Responding to a question about combating scammers, especially for the elderly, Mehrdad emphasizes the need to be cautious of scam websites. Many banks and familiar online stores have adequate security systems. If encountering an unfamiliar page, it should be verified before allowing them access to any personal or financial information. He provides further guidance for individuals, especially those unfamiliar with online practices, to input their personal information with more care.

He stresses the importance of using stronger passwords for social media or banking accounts and suggests adding an extra layer of security to our online accounts. To enhance security, one can include their phone number in their profile. Even if someone else has your password, they would also need the code sent to your phone to access your account.

Mehrdad warns that many links or emails lead elsewhere when clicked, potentially resulting in the theft of personal information from computers or phones. Continuing, Mehrdad suggests that if your computer or phone breaks, you should erase any personal information before handing it over for repairs and offers solutions to ensure that deleted files cannot be accessed.

He concludes by affirming Majid's remarks that YouTube has excellent videos for familiarizing oneself with the world of computers, and everyone can benefit from them for free.
