Neepawa Steps Up Consumer Housing Education

When the Town of Neepawa announced that several new housing lots would soon be available, interest from local residents was immediate and overwhelming. The community has struggled with a shortage of housing for many years, and newcomer families in particular are eager to purchase a place of their own. However, it quickly became clear that interest often outpaced preparedness, especially for those starting from an empty lot rather than a fully constructed home.

This prompted EDO Marilyn Crewe to develop Pathway to Home Ownership, a free, full-day workshop designed to educate new buyers on the process of constructing a home. The program combines presentations from outside experts, who provide unbiased guidance, with a trade show that connects attendees with local service providers. Topics include financial literacy, understanding legal requirements, and navigating the Planning Department.

“I want this to not just be about the bare land,” says Crewe, “but about obtaining housing, whatever that looks like for you.” A local housing study, available at chooseneepawa.ca, highlights the community’s need for housing at all levels, from large family homes to smaller apartments. Crewe adds that while one session cannot cover everything, it will provide attendees with the foundation they need, and a follow-up session may explore topics like working with developers or dealing with insurance.

Pathway to Home Ownership will be held at the Yellowhead Centre in Neepawa on Saturday, September 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
