News Highlights for Southwest New Brunswick: June 8, 2021
New Brunswick is inching towards our first major vaccination goal of having at least 75% of the eligible population vaccinated with at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. And while vaccination numbers have delayed the launch of Phase 1 of the Path to Re-opening, that hasn't put a damper on things in St. Andrews where locals are finding exciting ways to socialize safely outside.
A new water gate that locks the saltwater into the cove was installed at Katy's Cove this past week--perfect timing for The Saint Andrews Paddling Club to launch its newly purchased second dragon boat for the team's first weekend of practice for the season. Over 20 enthusiastic participants came out, some already members of the local dragon boat team and some first-timers looking to try their hand at a new activity.
If you are looking to try out the sport, visit the Saint Andrews Paddling Club on Facebook for more information. Katy's Cove is also now open for swimmers and beach goers as well.
The Charlotte County Archives has launched the first ever St. Andrews Heritage Hunt. Locals and visitors can purchase tickets for $10 at various locations around town that contain a map and clues to 12 heritage buildings or architectural features to discover on a historical scanvenger hunt of the town plat.
A grand prize winner will be selected from a draw at the end of the season. Prizes will include a night at the Algonquin Resort, one-year family memberships to Ministers Island, the Huntsman Marine Science Centre and Kingsbrae Garden. The heritage hunt is taking the place of the usual historic homes tour due to COVID-19 as the Archives' summer fundraiser for the nonprofit organization.
New town councils were sworn in last night in Blacks Harbour, St. George and St. Andrews. The new councils in both Blacks Harbour and Saint Andrews had their first council meetings directly following the swearing-in ceremony. In Blacks Harbour, Adam Hatt was named Deputy Mayor and Kate Akagi was named Deputy Mayor of Saint Andrews.
