Nipissing First Nation - Anishinabek Nation Governance Agreement Info Session #2
On January 31, 2020, Nipissing First Nation held an information session regarding the Anishinawbek Governance Agreement, that was livestreamed on FirstTelTV5's livestream page, so that off-reserve Nipissing members could watch and get informed on the vote being held at the end of February 2020.
The Anishinawbe Governance Agreement is an attempt to remove Anishinabek member First Nations from the election provisions of the Indian Act, and to set longer terms for elected leaders.
The Anishinabek member First Nations have never ceded their sovereignty to other governments such as Canada. While member First Nations maintain that they are their own government, they are not recognized as such. It is hoped that through the proposed Governance Agreement, governments will recognize Anishinabek Nation member nations as individual governments with legal status parallel to the federal and provincial governments.
