Nova Scotia Election Called for November 26
In The Record Episode 26, Civic Journalist Jake Boudrot discusses Nova Scotia's upcoming election. Premier Tim Houston announced that Nova Scotians will head to the polls for a general election on Tuesday, Nov. 26. The announcement came after a meeting with Lt-Gov. Arthur J. Leblanc on Oct. 27, during which Houston requested the dissolution of the General Assembly to initiate the election.

“We encourage all Nova Scotians to get out and vote,” Houston said. “This is your chance to build the future of our province.” According to provincial law, the campaign period must last a minimum of 30 days, with the election held on a Tuesday.

Opposition Leaders Respond to Election Timing
The decision has drawn criticism from opposition leaders, who argue the timing is politically motivated. Liberal Leader Zach Churchill called it an “unnecessary provincial election,” expected to cost $13 million, which he argues could be better spent on healthcare, housing, or cost-of-living relief. He emphasized that a Liberal government would prioritize transparency, proposing measures like an ethics commissioner to ensure accountability in governance.

Nova Scotia NDP Leader Claudia Chender criticized the early election call as a strategic move, accusing Houston of focusing on retaining power over serving the people. “Our priority is making life better for Nova Scotians,” she said, underscoring the NDP’s goals of lowering housing, power, and grocery costs, and improving healthcare. Chender also highlighted what she calls a series of “broken promises” by Houston, including commitments to fix healthcare and set a fixed election date, as well as environmental protections.

Provincial Politician Shifts to Federal Politics
Meanwhile, former Inverness MLA and provincial cabinet minister Allan MacMaster announced his departure from provincial politics to pursue the Conservative nomination in the new federal riding of Cape Breton-Canso-Antigonish. MacMaster has served as the Inverness MLA for 15 years and held roles such as Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance under the Progressive Conservative government.

MacMaster highlighted some of his achievements for Inverness, including expanding fiber optic internet and cell coverage, increasing healthcare funding, and securing support for community facilities. Despite leaving his provincial role, MacMaster pledged support for the PC candidate in Inverness, aiming to continue contributing to Premier Houston’s team at the federal level.

Port Hastings Intersection Project Progresses
Amid the election news, updates on the Port Hastings Rotary transformation project were shared. The Nova Scotia Public Works department announced that design work is complete, with construction set to begin early this winter and an expected completion in 2028. The redesign will improve connections between Highway 104, Highway 105, Trunk 4, and Route 19, with additional land acquisitions ongoing to facilitate these upgrades.

Public Works emphasized that the new intersection will prevent congestion caused by marine traffic at the Canso Causeway, adding that the addition of a pedestrian bridge over Trunk 4 will enhance safety and accessibility for travellers.

Missing Person Case Closure
In other news, the remains of Derek Kruger, a 78-year-old man reported missing on Oct. 3, were recently found in a wooded area in Greenfield. Nova Scotia RCMP reported that Kruger’s vehicle was first discovered abandoned on Sept. 30. Although the investigation is ongoing, RCMP officials stated there is no indication of suspicious circumstances.

Richmond Municipal Council Elections
Lastly, during the Richmond Municipal Council swearing-in on Oct. 30 in Arichat, council members elected District 2 Councillor Lois Landry as warden and District 5 Councillor Brent Sampson as deputy warden, marking new leadership after former Warden Amanda Mombourquette’s term. The ceremony, presided over by Judge Laurie Halfpenny MacQuarrie, ushers in a new era for the Richmond community.
