Regent Park SDP Kicks Off 2025: Funding, Inclusion, and Community Priorities in Focus

By Dawar Naeem Dawar is a community journalist with FOCUS MEDIA ARTS CENTRE

The Regent Park Social Development Plan (SDP) Planning Committee convened its first meeting of 2025 on January 9th, led by Elena Taghizadeh, Co-Chair of the Employment and Economic Development working group. The meeting focused on governance, funding, and the roles of the SDP’s four working groups: Safety, Communication, Employment and Economic Development, and Community Building.

Regent Park is one of the few communities with an SDP, a unique framework that empowers residents to shape the neighbourhood’s future. This initiative is vital for fostering equity, transparency, and sustained community-led development. The SDP stands as a model for prioritizing resident needs and voices in urban redevelopment.

Discussions included refining voting processes to enhance transparency and inclusivity. Concerns were raised about representation and decision-making structures to better reflect Regent Park’s diverse population.

The Funding Committee highlighted the importance of a long-term financial strategy, particularly regarding the $26.8 million in community benefits from Tridel, the developer for Phases 4 and 5 of the revitalization. Members explored securing additional funding through grants, partnerships, and government allocations to support both TCHC and market-rate residents.

Civic engagement is a crucial element of the SDP process, and Focus Media Arts Centre plays an essential role in keeping residents informed and involved. Through media coverage, storytelling, and advocacy, the Centre amplifies community voices and promotes transparency in the redevelopment process.

The SDP Planning Committee strives to foster inclusive community governance while balancing economic growth with social equity. Ongoing discussions will shape Regent Park’s future, ensuring all voices are heard throughout its transformation.
