In today’s episode Dawar Naeem journalist Dawar Naeem interviews Regent Park area residents about what Ramadan means to them.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It lasts twenty-nine to thirty days, from one sighting of the crescent moon to the next. This month holds great importance for Muslims, as it is the first time, Allah (God) revealed the Quran (Holy book) to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The fasting during this month is considered as one of the five pillars Islam.

The month of Ramadan provides an opportunity for Muslims to reflect on the circumstances of people, and they collectively perform social charities; distribute food, clothes and perform other community building activities.

However, with the second consecutive year of COVID-19 pandemic, the Muslims have experienced difficulty in observing Ramadan, given the places of worship are closed for congregational prayers, and family gathering are prohibited across the world.

The Regent Park community has a great number of Muslim residents who are currently observing Ramadan. Previously, during Ramadan the community could gather and observe the month together. Unfortunately, the pandemic has imposed severe challenges but still Muslims are observing Ramadan, while keeping the Covid-19 safety procedures in mind.

The month of Ramadan is concluded with Eid-ul-Fitr. Muslims, meet their friends and family, offer Eid prayers, feast together and share gifts. But due to the pandemic Eid will not be the same since large gatherings are not allowed or advised. But I am sure Muslims around the world will adapt to the new normal and utilize technology to connect with their loved ones, virtually.

Ramadan and Eid Mubarak to all.
