Safer Communities Fund Program Concludes Pilot in New Westminster

The Safer Communities Fund Program in New Westminster has completed its pilot project and presented its findings to the City Council on June 10th. The program aims to reduce youth involvement in gangs and gun violence by enhancing community safety and resilience.

In other cities where the program has been implemented, there has been a notable decline in youth gang involvement. For instance, in Surrey, the initiative contributed to a 15% reduction in youth gang activity over two years. Similarly, Vancouver saw a 10% decrease in youth gun violence incidents within a year of the program's launch.

Despite these successes, New Westminster continues to face challenges. Recent statistics indicate a 20% rise in the number of youths struggling with gang-related issues and gun violence over the past year.

A key component of the project is the Situation Table, a weekly gathering at City Hall where service providers and individuals connected to youth come together to identify and support at-risk youth. The Situation Table includes representatives from schools, health services, social services, law enforcement, and community organizations. This collaborative approach ensures that diverse perspectives and resources are leveraged to provide comprehensive support to vulnerable youths, making it a crucial part of the project's success.

Councilor Tasha Henderson highlighted the proactive measures being taken: "We are well underway with the youth resiliency framework. We've set up a situation table where service providers and people connected to youth come every week to City Hall and triage some of the most at-risk youth in the community."
