Schreiber Wants to Redesign Their Website
The final Schreiber council meeting for October opened with the customary land acknowledgment, followed by the addition of two items to the evening’s agenda. The minutes from previous meetings were reviewed and accepted as circulated, leading to discussions on some unfinished business.
Key resolutions included approving the quotation for winter sand to maintain roads during the coming season and accepting the invoice for renovations to the Municipal Complex roof. Council also approved a donation for next summer’s Red Rock Beeriest and confirmed attendees for the upcoming ROMA conference. Payments for purchases were reviewed and approved.
One bylaw, authorizing the design and procurement of a new highway sign, was passed after resolving a cost discrepancy. Additionally, an agreement was introduced regarding a potential wind energy project. A parcel of land has been designated should the initiative proceed.
During the Committee of the Whole segment, department reports were presented, starting with a discussion on updating the town website. The council emphasized the need for a more user-friendly design that makes information easier to access, and some suggestions were proposed.
The Economic Development Officer provided updates on recent grant applications and ongoing projects nearing completion. Preparations are underway for a new sign at the Schreiber Discovery Centre ahead of its next season, and a committee will be established to assist with the centre’s operations.
The Beautification Committee report was also shared, with outstanding payments approved. Meanwhile, the Director of Operations highlighted persistent issues at the sewer plant, including mechanical failures and aging infrastructure. The state of emergency precaution remains in effect due to the prohibitive cost of building a new plant. The water treatment plant is also showing signs of strain, though ongoing repairs are keeping it operational. On a positive note, the arena ice is ready, and the recreation department has scheduled upcoming events.
Concerns about oversight within the wastewater treatment system were raised during the wastewater treatment report discussion.
Under communications, council addressed several support requests. Plans for the annual Christmas greeting ad on CFNO radio were approved, and the importance of prioritizing media spending was discussed. Preparations for the town’s Christmas social are nearly complete, with the event scheduled for early December.
The meeting concluded with council moving into a closed session for further discussions.
