Shilan Zade: A Conservative Voice for North Burnaby and Seymour
In this in-depth conversation, Shilan Zade, an Iranian-born Canadian resident of over 22 years, shares her journey from a small town in Kurdistan to becoming a Conservative Party candidate for North Burnaby and Seymour.
Shilan discusses her professional background, which includes over 15 years of advocacy for women and children through global organizations like UNESCO and various NGOs. She highlights her efforts to empower women in underserved regions, focusing on providing education, skills, and resources for sustainable livelihoods. “I worked with women who had little to no access to education or economic opportunities, helping them acquire soft skills or use their art as a source of income to support their families,” she recalls.
A pivotal moment in her journey came with the tragic death of Jina (Mahsa) Amini in September 2022. “The depth of the tragedy and the global protests that followed made me realize the urgent need to amplify voices—both within the Iranian diaspora and for those in Iran,” Shilan shares. Witnessing the collective grief and the outcry for justice, she felt a profound moral responsibility to use her platform for advocacy. “I understood this was a global tragedy, and as someone living in a free society, I had the privilege and duty to act.”
Despite not visiting Iran in 15 years, Shilan remains deeply connected to its people, staying informed through direct engagement with individuals across regions, including marginalized and border communities.
She also addresses the challenges faced by Iranian communities in Canada. “One of the biggest obstacles we face is the lack of mutual acceptance and collaboration. We come together with passion, but when it comes to long-term efforts in cultural and civic initiatives, we struggle to see them through,” she notes. She underscores the importance of teamwork, expertise, and a shared vision.
Shilan questions whether the values that drew many Iranians to Canada have been fully embraced within the diaspora. “We chose Canada for its strong foundations and opportunities, but have we truly implemented those values in our own communities? Have we built the systems we need to grow and thrive here?”
Throughout the conversation, Shilan raises thought-provoking questions about identity, unity, and progress within immigrant communities. She challenges individuals to reflect on their role in fostering a cohesive and empowered diaspora.
This interview offers a rare and personal glimpse into the challenges, aspirations, and hopes of a candidate striving to bridge her past and present in meaningful ways. It is a compelling story of advocacy, leadership, and the relentless pursuit of change.
