Shine a Light: Raising Awareness for Victims of Crime
The 'Power of Collaboration' initiative, supported by the Department of Justice, is a nationwide organization designed to shed light on victims of crime. This seminar, held at West Vancouver Library, is a pivotal component of community engagement, providing essential information on support services by fostering connections within our society. Hosted by Sherry Soltani, Poran Poregbal, and Samira Gholami, in collaboration with Skyrise Media Society, Middelpeace Society, and Wellwishers community group, the event aimed to raise public awareness about various forms of victimization, including spousal assault, sexual assault, criminal harassment, chronic stress, and elder abuse.
Sherry began by welcoming the audience, outlining the agenda of the seminar, and introducing the guest speakers. She also emphasized the significance of these topics within the Persian community, underlining the importance of awareness and support.
During the seminar, attendees explored the profound impact of violence against women, including physical, sexual, and psychological abuse often found within families. Manijeh Ghaffari led discussions on its historical and cultural roots, highlighting its multifaceted nature and harmful effects on victims. Delving into these complexities, participants gained insight into the pervasive nature of crime and the need for comprehensive prevention strategies. Manijeh's presentation encouraged attendees to challenge societal norms and advocate for gender equality, fostering a collective commitment to ending violence against women.
Poran and Samira further elucidated the detrimental effects of domestic violence and child sexual abuse, particularly highlighting the profound mental, physical, and social repercussions on children. They underscored the lasting trauma experienced by survivors, especially in girls and the imperative need for comprehensive support systems.
Ali Khoddami, MA, RCC, provided insights into chronic stress, addressing its pervasive impact on mental and physical health, while offering strategies for effective stress management. Following the break, Poran and Samira revisited the theme of chronic stress, emphasizing its interconnectedness with mental health issues and the importance of proactive coping mechanisms.
Concluding the seminar, Reza Mohagegh, RCC, addressed the urgent issue of elder abuse, covering its various forms, root causes, warning signs, and preventive measures. He outlined different types of abuse, including physical, emotional, financial, and neglect, while also discussing factors like social isolation and caregiver stress that contribute to abuse. Reza highlighted warning signs for attendees to watch and stressed the importance of proactive measures such as support networks for seniors and education for caregivers to prevent elder abuse. His presentation provided valuable insights and tools for combating this pressing issue in our communities.
In closing remarks, Sherry emphasized the importance of community awareness and collaboration in addressing the various forms of victimization discussed during the seminar. She highlighted the collective responsibility we share in supporting survivors and fostering safer environments. By staying informed, engaged, and united, we can work towards creating a society where everyone feels safe and supported. In the end, Sherry, Poran and Samira expressed gratitude to all participants and volunteers for their commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others. As a token of appreciation, certificates were presented to honour the guest speakers and volunteers, recognizing their invaluable contributions to the seminar and their unwavering dedication to raising awareness and providing support for victims of crime.
