St. George Holds Its Last Council Meeting As An Incorporated Town

The Town of St. George held its final regular council meeting as a municipality in December 2022. In January 2023, St. George dissolves as an incorporated community and will become part of a new municipality known as Eastern Charlotte, which will also include Blacks Harbour, Pennfield, Lake Utopia, Back Bay and Bonnie River. In November of 2022, 50 municipalities and 12 rural districts across New Brunswick held elections for the first time after they were created by the province's local governance reform initiative. Current councils that are becoming part of new communities have been in a transitional period since local governance reform was announced by the Province of New Brunswick in 2021.

"We have finished up the budget for Eastern Charlotte and sent it to the province. We received a few notes back today and are reviewing those and will re-submit them shortly," said current CAO for St. George who will also be the CAO for Eastern Charlotte when it amalgamation takes effect in January 2023. Gaudet has been working closely with a facilitator and a transition team to ensure amalgamation goes as smoothly as possible.

"For a local government reform update, we are going through some renovations at the St. George Municipal Building. We are renovating a few offices and will have new signage in time for January."

Eastern Charlotte has elected John D. Craig, the current Mayor of the Village of Blacks Harbour, to be its first-ever mayor. Current St. George Councillor, Alexa Detorakis, will be joining the Eastern Charlotte Council as a councillor as well.
