Strait Talk Ep. 36
The interim leader of the Liberal Party of Nova Scotia, Sydney-Membertou MLA Derek Mombourquette, recently spoke with Civic Journalist about the provincial election results and the future direction of his party.
Former Yarmouth MLA Zach Churchill announced on December 10 that he would step down as Liberal leader after 14 years in politics. Mombourquette was named interim leader, tasked with rebuilding the party and advocating for Nova Scotians.
Alongside Mombourquette, Timberlea-Prospect MLA and former Premier Iain Rankin will serve as the Liberal Party's House Leader. According to a statement from the Liberals, both Mombourquette and Rankin have agreed to share leadership duties until a formal leadership race is held, splitting their responsibilities evenly.
When asked how this arrangement would work and whether it constituted a power-sharing model, Mombourquette provided insight into the party's strategy. He was also questioned about the timeline for the upcoming leadership race.
The Liberal Party’s position in the legislature has drastically shifted, with just two seats secured on election night. The Progressive Conservatives won a commanding 43 seats, while the NDP, now the Official Opposition, claimed nine. In the local ridings of Richmond and Inverness, Liberal candidates finished a distant second.
Mombourquette reflected on these results and shared his approach to holding the PC government accountable. Given the party's historically poor performance, he was asked whether the Liberals risk becoming irrelevant in Nova Scotia and what steps will be taken to rebuild.
The conversation also touched on the potential impact of federal politics. Mombourquette was asked if the unpopularity of the federal Liberals, particularly Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, contributed to the party’s defeat.
Finally, Mombourquette delivered a message to Nova Scotia Liberals concerned about the party’s future, emphasizing his commitment to renewal and regaining public trust.
