Strait Talk Ep. 40

Richmond Warden Lois Landry Discusses Key Municipal Issues in Civic Journalism Interview

In an effort to foster public engagement and dialogue, Richmond Warden Lois Landry sat down with Civic Journalist Jake Boudrot to discuss pressing issues affecting the Municipality of the County of Richmond, its residents, businesses, and community organizations.

Update on Proposed Multi-Use Facility

Landry provided an update on the community engagement sessions regarding the proposed multi-use facility to replace the Richmond Arena. The discussions aimed to gather public input and assess the community’s needs as the municipality moves forward with planning.

Clarification on Property Assessments

With some property owners receiving or expecting property assessments from the Property Valuation Services Corporation, Landry clarified that the municipality is not responsible for issuing assessments or determining property values. She acknowledged past confusion on this matter and reassured residents that assessments are managed independently by the province.

Affordable Housing Developments Underway

Affordable housing was a major concern during the last municipal election, and Landry emphasized the progress made on this front. She highlighted ongoing and planned developments, including a project at the former West Richmond Education Centre in Evanston, as part of efforts to address the housing shortage in Richmond County.

Seniors Advocacy and Community Concerns

Landry also met with the Seniors Take Action Coalition to discuss issues impacting seniors across Richmond County. She shared insights from the meeting, reaffirming the municipality’s commitment to addressing the needs of its aging population.

Potential Tariffs and Economic Impact

A key point of concern was the looming threat of U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods, which could have serious consequences for local employers like the Port Hawkesbury Paper mill in Point Tupper. While former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a delay in implementation, Landry stressed that the threat remains and could significantly impact businesses and community groups in the region.

Public Engagement Initiative

After the interview, Boudrot announced plans to launch a public engagement series, encouraging residents to ask questions, provide feedback, and raise issues for discussion in future segments.
