Richmond MLA Trevor Boudreau recently sat down with Civic Journalist Jake Boudrot to discuss several key issues affecting the local community.

Just before the interview, Boudreau announced that he is seeking re-election in Richmond County and will be the Progressive Conservative candidate. Asked about his decision to run again, Boudreau emphasized the role of his family in the decision: “These conversations are certainly a family conversation, and my wife and kids are supportive of me continuing on,” he said. “I’m motivated because I want to see progress continue.”

One major topic was housing, particularly concerns raised by a developer regarding restrictive provincial regulations and insufficient financial incentives. Boudreau was asked whether these regulations needed adjustment and whether the government could do more to expand housing options.

On the subject of affordability, Boudreau responded to criticism from opposition parties that blame the provincial government’s economic policies. He was asked if the federal Liberal government should bear more of the blame for affordability challenges faced by many Nova Scotians.

The conversation then shifted to the Coastal Protection Act. The NDP and Liberals have accused the Progressive Conservatives of "flip-flopping" on the Act. The PCs initially supported it in 2019 but later decided against enacting it after taking office. Critics warn this could leave taxpayers responsible for homes damaged by coastal erosion as severe weather events become more frequent. Boudreau was asked whether his party's decision reflected the desires of most Nova Scotians.

Boudreau also provided updates on local infrastructure concerns, including the one-lane road leading to Lennox Passage Provincial Park and potential improvements at Pondville Provincial Beach Park, such as new walkways, change rooms, and bathrooms. Regarding Port Royal, Boudreau was asked if residents should accept that no bridge will return and that MacEachern Road will remain the main route to and from the community and neighbouring areas like St. Mary’s and Janvrins Island.

Turning to health care, opposition parties have pointed to the growing number of Nova Scotians without a family doctor, long ambulance wait times, and emergency department closures as evidence that health care is worsening under the current government. Boudreau was asked if his government’s spending is sufficient and if resources should be more strategically allocated to address specific problem areas.

“Health care has always been a priority and continues to be,” Boudreau said. “We’ve made many health care announcements, not just recently but over the past three years. However, it’s no surprise that affordability and housing have become critical issues affecting people across the province and the country. Locally, infrastructure is vital—whether it’s internet, cell coverage, or roads. These are the calls we get, and it’s important to have someone advocating for these needs.”
