Students Becomes Mayor and Fire Chief for a Day in St. Andrews

Vincent Massey Elementary School grade 5 student Liam Bartlett had the opportunity to step into the role of Mayor for a Day in St. Andrews, offering a heartwarming look at youth engagement in local government. The event was featured on CHCO-TV’s Your Town Matters, hosted by Vicki Hogarth. Joining the young mayor were St. Andrews’ actual mayor, Brad Henderson, Fire Chief Kevin Theriault, and Fire Chief for the Day, Wilder Collier, age 7.

During the program, Liam shared his simple yet touching reason for wanting to be mayor: “To hang out with Brad,” highlighting the positive influence of community role models. Mayor Brad Henderson remarked on Liam’s thoughtful application, noting that his politeness and sincerity made him stand out among many other submissions. “It was a tough decision, but Liam’s letter really showed how much thought he put into it,” Henderson said, joking that Liam even complimented him on being “a pretty good mayor.”

Liam’s day as mayor included planning community-oriented activities. One of his first actions was to organize a beach cleanup for his schoolmates, rewarding their efforts with cookies. He also made the declaration of “free skating for everyone," showcasing his desire to bring fun and inclusivity to the town. Mayor Henderson added with a chuckle, “You’ve got to be your own mayor, even if some might argue against free skating.”

The episode also touched on important local issues, including the delay in the Wharf Renovation Project. Mayor Henderson explained that due to complications with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the project has been pushed back to October 2025, with the financial impact estimated at $1 million to $1.5 million.

Joining Liam and Mayor Henderson was Fire Chief Kevin Theriault and Fire Chief for the Day, Wilder Collier. Wilder, who lives near the fire station, expressed his excitement about the role: “Every time I wake up, I see a fire truck leaving, and I’ve always wanted to be a firefighter.” His experience included a tour of the fire department and a ride home from school in a fire truck, fulfilling a long-time dream.

Chief Theriault used the opportunity to discuss the importance of Fire Prevention Week, advising residents to check their smoke alarms monthly and replace the batteries annually.

Liam Bartlett and Wilder Collier’s day as civic leaders was a testament to St. Andrews’ commitment to involving its youngest residents in community affairs, fostering leadership, and encouraging civic responsibility from an early age.
