Village Of Grand Manan Council Meeting Highlights For May 2023

The regular Village of Grand Manan Council Meeting for the month of May 2023 covered a variety of topics. The RCMP reported an increase in activity from the previous year, responding to 60 files in April, with charges laid in 11 of those. Council discussed the SCAN Program and the Neighbourhood Watch, and also a bike rodeo that is being planned for the next month.

Council discussed proposals for new modular tables for their council room. The price for the tables was around $15,000 plus tax, which some members thought was high. However, the council decided to have Finance and Property review the proposal before making a decision. They also discussed the City of St. John's proposal to give the island a lighthouse from Market Square in Saint John, but debated whether they should accept the lighthouse.

Fundy-the Isles-Saint John West MLA Andrea Anderson-Mason was present at the meeting and spoke briefly. She congratulated Mayor Bonnie Morse and village council on their hard work during the pandemic and expressed her support for their efforts.

Grand Manan Village Council discussed bylaw enforcement services and passed a motion to appoint Keith Vernon Faulkner and Sherman Ralph Ross as bylaw enforcement officers for the village.

During a council meeting, various committees provided updates on their work, including the Transportation Committee reporting that resurfacing work on the airport will begin on June 17th and continue until July 30th. The council also discussed finances and approved the transfer of funds from the General Capital Fund to the General Operating Fund and from the Capital Reserve Fund to the General Capital Fund. Finally, council looked at the possibility of setting up a Facebook page for SCAN, a local organization that provides support for seniors, and explored the idea of creating a new community garden on the island.
