Winnipeg Support Groups Assisting Those Living With Mental Illness
Mental health is something we all face. Some of us can cope with it and deal with it well, but there are people whose conditions may develop and grow, and they need specialized agencies to provide them with assistance.
In Winnipeg, there is an association known as the Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba. This association provides services to people suffering from mental illnesses that pose a significant challenge.
This "Civic Platform" episode features Rita Chahal, Executive Director Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba. Chahal spoke about the importance of the association and its role in the psychological resilience of Winnipeg citizens. She also spoke on the programs and groups offered throughout the year and explained the importance of their diversity and their effectiveness in supporting those with mental health challenges. Chahal said that people with mental illnesses are reluctant to disclose and suffer because they feel ashamed and afraid to talk about their struggles.
Everyone must realize that mental illnesses are just like physical diseases that need examination, treatment, and patience to restore health and wellness. Mood Disorders Association has specialized programs directed to newcomers who suffer from poor English and cannot express the harsh conditions they went through in the past, whether it was wars or the promise of feeling safe. Even after arriving in Canada, they still feel fear and discomfort because of their constant concern for their families in their home countries. Mood Disorders Association is trying hard to provide interpreters and the appropriate atmosphere of trust for these newcomers and help them start a safe journey in a new life in Winnipeg.
