Yaran: Celebrating Community and Connection Among Iranian Seniors in North Vancouver

The Yaran Iranian Seniors Association in North Vancouver is a vibrant social group founded and managed by Mr. Kiamarz and Ms. Ghadamkheir Sadeghi. Each Monday, they host a variety of engaging programs for Iranian seniors at the North Vancouver Legion Hall. These sessions include recreational activities, educational workshops, medical seminars, and fitness classes, along with discussions on current political topics. Participants not only acquire practical skills to navigate daily life but also experience a renewed sense of hope, purpose, and joy in a supportive community setting.

Ms. Ghadamkheir Sadeghi highlights how eagerly the seniors anticipate these weekly gatherings, where they foster deep and meaningful friendships while sharing personal stories and life lessons. This sense of connection helps combat loneliness and enhances emotional well-being. Mr. Kiamarz Sadeghi adds that they also organize outings and excursions, where seniors are occasionally joined by their children and grandchildren. These intergenerational activities foster immense happiness and strengthen family bonds, creating cherished memories and bridging generational gaps.

In her role as a family counselor and psychologist, Ms. Sadeghi has observed the programs’ significant positive effects on the seniors' physical and mental health. Regular attendance at these events has not only helped participants maintain an active lifestyle but also improved their overall mobility and energy levels. Additionally, many seniors have made noticeable progress in their English language skills, which has boosted their confidence and ability to engage with their new surroundings. They’ve also gained valuable life skills, aiding their adaptation to a different culture and lifestyle in Canada.

Mr. Sadeghi underscores the association’s commitment to preserving and celebrating Iranian culture. By hosting traditional and national festivals such as Nowruz and Yalda Night, the group ensures that their rich cultural heritage remains vibrant and alive. These celebrations offer seniors an opportunity to reconnect with their roots, fostering pride and continuity while introducing younger generations to the beauty and depth of Iranian traditions.

Through these programs, the Yaran Iranian Seniors Association has become more than just a weekly gathering—it has evolved into a vital lifeline that enhances the quality of life for its members. It provides a space where seniors can thrive emotionally, socially, and culturally, contributing to their overall well-being and enriching the community as a whole.
