Yaran Iranian Group in Vancouver Hosts Discussion Panel with Jonathan Wilkinson

The Yaran Iranian Group in Vancouver recently hosted a discussion panel with Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and Member of Parliament (MP) for North Vancouver. The event provided a platform for community members to engage with the minister, voice their concerns, and gain insights into federal initiatives impacting their lives.

Majid Mahichi – Local Journalism Initiative

In a time of economic uncertainty following Donald Trump’s presidency in the U.S., many Canadian industries have faced challenges. Wilkinson’s presence at the event was seen as a step toward enhancing government transparency and engagement with Iranian-Canadians.

A Platform for Open Dialogue

The panel was moderated by Dr. Sedigheh Sadeghi and Dr. Pedrami, who facilitated discussions and provided translation. Attendees were encouraged to ask direct questions, ensuring an inclusive and interactive exchange between the minister and the community.

Federal Investments in North Vancouver

Wilkinson outlined key federal funding initiatives benefiting the local community, including:

$6 billion allocated to Canada’s Navy shipyard operations

$212 million invested in North Shore’s wastewater treatment system

$18 million granted for municipal infrastructure in Vancouver

$413 million dedicated to Indigenous education initiatives

These figures reflect the government’s ongoing commitment to economic development and public infrastructure in British Columbia.

The event also highlighted the role of the Yaran Iranian Group, which has been a cornerstone for Iranian-Canadians in Vancouver. The organization, self-funded through membership fees, provides vital services such as:

Weekly gatherings for seniors, fostering social engagement;

Workshops and resources on healthcare, law, fitness, and nutrition;

Promotion of Iranian and Canadian cultural heritage, emphasizing integration and diversity;

Government Support for Immigration Challenges

As North Vancouver has one of the largest Iranian-Canadian populations in Canada, Wilkinson acknowledged immigration-related issues as a primary concern. His office, particularly long-time staff member Fiona, assists residents with visa applications and federal government processes.

Wilkinson: "I Am Your Voice in Ottawa"

During the discussion, Wilkinson reassured attendees of his commitment to serving the Iranian-Canadian community, stating:

“My most important job is being your Member of Parliament—I am your voice in Ottawa. If you have challenges with the federal government, my office is here to help.”

He further emphasized his ministerial responsibilities:

“As Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, my role extends beyond this community, ensuring that Canada leads in energy development, sustainability, and resource management.”

A Commitment to Continued Engagement

Minister Wilkinson expressed gratitude for the invitation and highlighted the importance of continued dialogue between government and communities. He praised the Yaran Iranian Group’s efforts and encouraged further collaboration.
