You'll Never Believe What Happens When AI Takes Over: A Must See Play

Artificial intelligence and modern technology have become integral to our daily lives. However, the play ACK NOW, premiering at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, takes a humorous yet profound look at the potential dangers of overusing technology. The Fringe Festival is the second-largest theatre festival in North America, making it the perfect stage for a thought-provoking piece that speaks to the heart of contemporary issues.

Director Rachel E. Smith and playwright Craig Terlson explain that ACK NOW explores how excessive reliance on technology can lead to a struggle for personal identity. Smith, the director, emphasizes the play’s balance between humour and serious themes. “Comedy allows us to look at something very serious and think about it differently,” she says. “Sometimes the humour comes from the seriousness of the situation, making us reflect on our own experiences with technology.”

Terlson, the playwright, adds, “Some people are very fearful of AI. Through humour, we can ease those fears and open up a dialogue. The play shows that it’s okay to talk about technology and even laugh about it.”

Smith notes that the adjustments made to the script were mainly for clarity and timing, given the festival’s 60-minute limit. “We had to simplify some elements without losing the essence,” she explains. “For instance, when a line was removed, actors had to convey the message through their actions, adding depth to their performances.”

Terlson shares his writing process, highlighting the importance of routine and adaptability. “I write for at least an hour every day, whether at home, in coffee shops, or even airports. Music often helps me catch the rhythm of my writing.

Smith and Terlson believe their play is particularly relevant for the Winnipeg community. “Technology is evolving rapidly, and it’s crucial for us to understand its impact on our lives,” Smith states. “Winnipeg is a vibrant, diverse city, and this play can spark important conversations about how we use technology.”

Terlson echoes this sentiment, noting the play’s potential to foster community dialogue. “I want people to be aware of how technology affects their lives, both positively and negatively. ACK NOW provides a platform for these discussions.”

As ACK NOW takes the stage at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, Smith and Terlson are excited about the play’s potential impact. “We’re looking forward to seeing how the audience reacts and what discussions emerge,” Smith says.

Terlson invites festival-goers to continue the conversation beyond the theatre. “I’ll be in the beer tent after the show, ready to talk about AI and its role in our lives. Is AI good or bad? The answer is yes. It’s both, and that’s why it’s worth talking about.”

The play resonates deeply with a modern audience by addressing the overuse of technology and the quest for identity, making it a must-see at this year’s Winnipeg Fringe Festival.
