By Fred Alvarado Fred is a community journalist with FOCUS MEDIA ARTS CENTRE
On April 10th, 2024, Mayor Olivia Chow, alongside Councillor Chris Moise (Toronto Centre), in collaboration with Black communities, leaders, Black-serving agencies and partners, officially launched public consultations to inform Toronto residents about the new 10-Year Action Plan to confront anti-Black racism. Held at the CEE Centre for Young Black Professionals on 75 Thermos Rd., the event saw a strong commitment to addressing systemic racism and fostering inclusivity.
Building on past successes, including support for Black-owned businesses and enhanced Black leadership representation, the plan aims to deliver tangible improvements over the next decade. Public consultations will run until October, involving collaboration with Black communities, leaders, and organizations.
Mayor Olivia Chow says she is proud to play a role in the development a new 10-Year Action Plan that will build upon the achievements of the past five years and deliver meaningful progress for Black communities across the city. “Alongside our community partners, we remain steadfast in our commitment to eliminating anti-Black racism in Toronto and creating a city where everyone can live, work, and play with the respect and dignity they deserve,” she said at the event.
Aligning with the UN Decade for People of African Descent, the initiative underscores Toronto's commitment to recognition, justice, and development for Black communities. The event signifies a crucial step towards addressing systemic racism and advancing equity and justice in the city.
This initiative holds particular significance for the Regent Park community, as it represents a dedicated effort to address longstanding issues of systemic racism and inequality that have disproportionately affected its residents. By actively involving community members in the development of the Action Plan, there is an opportunity to tailor solutions to the specific needs and experiences of Regent Park residents, fostering a sense of ownership and empowerment within the community.
