The Arab Community in Winnipeg is Worried About the Rising Cost of Living

لا يستطيع أكثر من نصف الكنديين مواكبة تكلفة المعيشة الحالية وفقاً لاستطلاع  معهدُ ’’أنغوس ريد‘‘. هنا في مدينة وينيبيغ الحالة الاقتصادية تزداد صعوبة بسبب ارتفاع التكلفة المعيشية التي باتت تشكل عبئاً كبيراً على الجالية العربية وخاصة الذين وصلوا حديثاً الى وينيبيغ. فلم يعودوا قادرين على سداد فواتيرهم الشهرية واحتياجات أسرهم اليومية على سبيل المثال  

عبد السلام كيلولة تحدث مع الأستاذ محمد عبد الودود شلبي المحلل المالي والاقتصادي الذي حل ضيفاً على المنصة المدنية وقال: إرتفاع التكلفة المعيشية هي واحدة من أهم التحديات التي تواجه معظم مدن العالم وليس وينيبيغ فقط. سواء تكلفة الطاقة، البقالة، التدفئة, التبريد، الخ. ويعود ذلك لأسباب كثيرة أهمها ارتفاع أسعار النفط العالمية و ارتفاع التعرفة الجمركية، وعليه ارتفعت تكاليف الشحن وبالتالي أسعار البضائع جميعها أخذت في الارتفاع

شلبي أضاف قائلاً: مدينة وينيبيغ مدينة داخلية ولايوجد بها موانئ. وبالتالي هي تتطلب شحن إضافي من المدن الأخرى كتورينتو أو مونتريال لكي تصل البضائع الى أسواق وينيبيغ. لذلك تجد الأسعار مرتفعة مقارنةً بباقي المدن الساحلية 

شلبي وضح بقوله: الحرب الروسية الأوكرانية تسببت في نقص حاد في السلع والبضائع وبالتالي قل العرض وازداد الطلب بشكل كبير خصوصاً على المواد الغذائية. التجار للأسف استغلوا هذه الحقيقة بما يسمى بالتضخم الجشع وهذا يعني أنهم يحققون نسبة أرباح أكثر من ٧٠ إلى ٨٠ بالمئة من قيمة المنتج. المواطن أصبح اليوم غير قادر على تغطية مصاريفه الشهرية بسبب محدودية الدخل وارتفاع أسعار المنتجات بشكل غير معقول 

 خلال هذه الحلقة تطرق شلبي للكثير من المواضيع والتخوفات الأخرى، كدور الحكومة الكندية في مواجهة هذه الازمة، الضرائب وتاثيرها على غلاء المعيشة، وقدم نصائح قيمة للجالية العربية ليحسنوا التصرف في هذه الأوقات الصعبة

According to an Angus Reid Institute survey, more than half of Canadians are unable to keep up with the present cost of living. Here in Winnipeg, the economic situation is becoming more challenging because of the excessive cost of living, which has placed a significant burden on the Arab population, particularly those who have newly arrived. Many can no longer pay their monthly payments or meet their family's basic needs. 

Abdeslam Glioula spoke with Mohamed Shalabi, a financial and economic consultant, who stated that the high cost of living is one of the most pressing issues confronting most cities throughout the world, not just Winnipeg. Whether it is the expense of energy, groceries, heating, or cooling, this is due to various factors, the most significant of which is the rise in worldwide oil costs and the increase in customs taxes. Shipping costs have increased, and as a result, the prices of all commodities have begun to rise. 

Shalaby went on to say that Winnipeg is an inland city with no ports. As a result, more freight from other locations, such as Toronto or Montreal, is required for the items to reach Winnipeg markets. As a result, prices are higher than in other seaside cities. 

Chalabi noted that the Russian-Ukrainian war generated a serious shortage of commodities and goods, resulting in a fall in supply and a huge increase in demand, particularly for consumables. Unfortunately, merchants took advantage of this situation by engaging in what is known as greedy inflation, in which they achieved profits of more than 70 to 80 per cent of the product's value. Citizens today are unable to afford their monthly bills due to restricted income and exorbitant product pricing. 

During this episode, Shalaby addressed various additional issues and concerns, including the role of the Canadian government in dealing with the crisis, taxes, and their impact on the cost of living.
