Building Networks for Newcomer Families at "Winter Carnival" in Winnipeg
Human relationships are complex, so we all need friends and good relations with neighbours to feel stability and happiness. In Winnipeg, making new friends can be difficult for Winnipeggers and even harder for newcomers.
"Winter Carnival" is a beautiful occasion for families to gather, get to know each other, and break down barriers. This event is organized by Greendell Park Community Centre, Winnipeg.
Perry Gilmour, President of Greendell Park Community Centre, shares about the centre and its importance to communities in Winnipeg and the activities it does to bring families together to make new friends and for their children to spend time with each other. Gilmour added that the "Winter Carnival" is an annual meeting in the center's hall. Families are provided with dinners, music, gifts for children, and there are outdoor activities in the snow.
The Greendell Park Community Centre welcomes newcomers and provides them with various services and activities, so that they can integrate and get to know the city well. The Centre has many activities that participants can do, and it provides them with a network of support in their new city. This helps immigrants feel welcome.
Participation in these events is a first step for the new immigrant to start their journey in Winnipeg. Through them, they can build new friendships and a strong network of relationships that can help them overcome the challenges of integration and stability.
