The Dream Ride: Making Dreams Come True for Local Children with Life- Threatening Illness
The Dream Ride: A Community United for Kids in Need
The Dream Ride organization, founded to support Manitoba children battling life-threatening illnesses, has made a lasting impact thanks to the dedication of volunteers like Gary and Marsha Forgue from Neepawa. After learning about The Dream Factory, the Forgues were inspired to organize fundraisers benefiting local children facing serious health challenges.
A Community-Driven Beginning
Marsha Forgue shared their journey with NACTV Volunteer Dave Bennet. “We hosted ‘Curl for a Cause’ in 2018 and 2019. In 2019, it supported Makayla Aarts and her parents. Makayla was four at the time, undergoing cancer treatment in Winnipeg. The medical expenses were overwhelming, so ‘Curl for a Cause’ helped with costs. The Neepawa community came together, raising nearly $14,000 for the family.”
Discovering The Dream Factory
After that event, Makayla’s family, who had applied to The Dream Factory, invited the Forgues to a special event for Makayla in November 2019. That experience inspired Gary and Marsha to launch Dream Ride fundraisers in the Westman area.
“The Dream Factory grants every eligible child a dream of their choice,” explained Marsha. “It has to be the kid’s dream—not just a home renovation. They also provide financial support for parking, hotels, rent, or mortgage payments. They go above and beyond, ensuring families can safely experience moments they might otherwise miss.”
She continued, “Kids who are immunocompromised often can’t enjoy regular outings. The Dream Factory even rents out entire movie theatres so families can experience that safely. Their support extends before, during, and after fulfilling a child’s dream.”
The Annual Dream Ride Bike Event
One of Dream Ride’s key fundraisers is the Annual Bike Ride, held at Riding Mountain National Park. This scenic location enhances the event’s appeal, creating a meaningful and memorable experience for participants. The bike ride began during the COVID-19 pandemic as a safe outdoor event that maintained health and safety protocols while still supporting a good cause.
On July 29, 2024, the Dream Ride event welcomed 101 participants—an impressive 40% increase from the previous year. The growing popularity of the bike ride has strengthened the community’s support for Dream Ride’s mission, helping expand its reach and impact in Western Manitoba.
Through their dedication, Gary and Marsha Forgue continue to inspire others and create lasting change, bringing hope and joy to children and families when they need it most.
