Lake Superior North Shore Tourism update
This Schreiber council meeting started with a presentation from Superior Country. The Lake Superior North Shore Tourism study has been in existence for the last three years and its goal is to develop a strategy to identify and document opportunities for tourism in the greater north shore area. The presentation highlighted current and ongoing projects in the area including a waterfront trail study, an outreach and education workshop and accommodations, investment attractions and trail guide developments to name a few. Phase 2 of the project will extend funding for another three years.
The regular council meeting then resumed. There were no questions for Question Period. The minutes of previous meetings were accepted as circulated.
Council portion opened with the approval of the purchase of replacement valves and various other items at the water treatment plant as required by the OCWA maintenance agreement.
The purchase of temporary parking signs for around town was approved.
A resolution to continue the annual contribution to the Great Lakes Waterfront regeneration trust was approved.
The township approved the purchase for replacement equipment at the waste water treatment plant.
Costs associated withe the attendance at a mediation conference in Thunder Bay were approved.
Transfers to various departments were approved as per budget recommendations.
Other business included passing a bylaw to amend site plan regulations as a means to control property development. A discussion regarding what constitutes a rural area came up as a result of the motion.
Schreiber will enter into an agreement with the Northern Ontario Heritage fund which will allow a 50% reduction in the cost of hiring someone for the FSPA position to help with Economic development.
Committee of the whole portion of the meeting opened with the Treasurer report regarding the Tax ratio implementation. The proposal was to keep the current commercial rates status quo in an effort to not increase the tax burden on residents.
The cost of Mayors and councillors and the associated expenses was discussed briefly.
Director of Operations report included the insurance appraisal in regards to repairing the Handi Transit van as opposed to purchasing a new vehicle. A rental vehicle may have to be located as even a new vehicle will take over 12 months to acquire.
The old oil tank and furnace from the municipal building was sold in auction. The Ontario Street reline project was also discussed.
The cost for filter study and upgrades at the water plant was discussed and approved.
The Worthington Bay cemetery extension was the next topic presented. Currently the land has been marked for a cemetery expansion but there are consideration as the property is located 5 kilometres outside of town. Maintaining a remote area as well as the perception of having access to family burial plots so far from town will be a tough sell to residents. Transportation issues will need to be considered as well. The current location in town will reach capacity in the next decade.
Schreiber Public Library board meeting minutes were presented. A question regarding the Connectivity grant was brought forward.
The preventative maintenance agreement with Clou Darling for the HVAC systems in municipal buildings was brought forward and now includes the Discovery centre.
Under Communications the was a communication from Superior Greenstone regarding parking in school areas that are in proximity to loading zones.
Unfinished business focussed on the finalization of the watering of summer plants in the downtown area.
The March meeting schedule was finalized and the meeting then moved to in camera.

Schreiber Community Media is a non profit organization established with the aim of providing media production services and training for the residents of Schreiber and surrounding areas. Schreiber is located on the north shore of Lake Superior approximately two hours east of Thunder Bay.
The Schreiber Media Centre is locating in the Schreiber Public Library and includes tools for recording, live streaming and post production of audio and video.
