From Pakistan to Canada: An Inspiring Immigrant Success Story
Amna Iqbal, co-founder of Healthy Muslim Families (HMF), has dedicated her life to easing immigrants' transition into the Canadian system. Originally from Pakistan, Amna moved to Canada in 2008 with her husband and their 18-month-old son. With a background in commerce and business administration, she has become a key figure in the Winnipeg community, empowering women, seniors, and children through various initiatives.
Amna described her move to Canada as a significant change, filled with excitement and challenges. "Immigration means change, and change is never easy." She recounted her initial experiences, from the joy of seeing snowfall for the first time to the struggles of finding resources and signing leases without the support system she had in Pakistan.
Despite having some connections in Canada, the transition was tough. "You need a lot of moral support… buying the necessary furniture, controlling and managing your finances," she shared. Amna highlighted the importance of community support, which played a crucial role in settling down. She recalled her early struggles, like finding halal grocery stores and managing daily life logistics.
One of the first cultural shocks Amna experienced was the friendliness of strangers. "I was walking on the pathway, and there were two people walking across from me, and they gave me a smile. I realized that's a culture here." This small gesture made her feel welcomed and helped her adjust to her new environment.
Amna emphasized that adapting to a new country takes time and effort. "It takes your confidence, your skills, your life experiences… it takes everything." She credited her achievements to the support system she had in Canada and Pakistan, stating, "It takes a village to raise a child, and I think that phrase goes with everyone at any age."
Amna's involvement in the volunteer community led to the establishment of Healthy Muslim Families. As the director of programs at HMF, she has been instrumental in creating initiatives that empower various community groups. She also remains active in the ICNA Sisters' Organization, demonstrating her commitment to community service.
Looking back, Amna expressed a sense of fulfillment and gratitude. "I'm happy with whatever I am now." Acknowledging the combined influence of her past experiences and the support she received. Despite the challenges, Amna's journey is a testament to the resilience and strength of immigrants building new lives in a foreign land.
Amna Iqbal's story is an inspiring example of how determination, community support, and cultural adaptation can lead to personal and collective success. Her work with HMF continues to significantly impact the lives of immigrants in Canada, proving that any challenge can be overcome with the proper support.
