Reclaiming Public Spaces: Ryan’s Hope Launches Campaign at Barrie Public Library
Barrie, ON – Ryan’s Hope, a local advocacy and outreach organization, recently launched its "Reclaiming Public Spaces" campaign outside the Barrie Public Library. Led by co-founder Christine Nayler, the initiative focuses on ensuring that public spaces remain inclusive for all, particularly individuals experiencing homelessness.
The campaign kickoff featured volunteers distributing hot chocolate and cookies, offering "free hugs," and engaging in discussions about public space accessibility. Nayler framed the event as an exercise of "Charter rights and freedoms under Section Two of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms," responding to statements by the mayor regarding restrictions on the use of public spaces by homeless individuals.
A conversation took place between Nayler and library staff about the distribution of food and drinks, with the library citing policies against such activities on its property. Nayler, however, maintained that the protest was directed at municipal policies, not the library itself and that public spaces should remain accessible to all.
Ryan’s Hope volunteers, including Ash Pineau, played an active role in the event, reinforcing the campaign’s goal of fostering community support for vulnerable individuals. Nayler outlined that the campaign will continue with monthly events at various public locations in Barrie over the next six months, with the next gathering scheduled for March 16th at Memorial Square. The group aims to raise awareness and advocate for the rights of all residents, regardless of housing status.
In addition to the campaign, Ryan’s Hope continues its broader outreach efforts, including direct support for individuals living in encampments and advocacy for increased shelter and warming center availability. Nayler emphasized the urgent need for more resources, particularly during extreme cold weather conditions.
Resident Greg, who attended the event with his daughter, expressed support for the initiative, stating, "As long as it's not bothering anybody, what harm does it do?" He also acknowledged the growing housing crisis in Barrie and the need for long-term solutions.
Pineau, a street outreach volunteer, spoke about the campaign’s importance in countering divisive rhetoric and fostering a sense of community. "These campaigns are really important because we're bringing back love and connection to Barrie," she said. She also highlighted the emotional toll of outreach work, particularly in harsh winter conditions, describing the experience as "heartbreaking" due to the struggles faced by those living without shelter.
Ryan’s Hope continues to advocate for systemic change while providing hands-on support to those in need. Through the "Reclaiming Public Spaces" campaign, the organization seeks to ensure that public spaces remain places of refuge, connection, and dignity for all members of the community.
