Community Groups Speak Out Against Bill-185 at Toronto City Hall

By Fred Alvarado Fred is a community journalist with FOCUS MEDIA ARTS CENTRE

On May 9th, community groups, including the Regent Park Neighbourhood Association and the Coalition for Equitable and Inclusive City Development, gathered at Toronto City Hall for a media conference to voice concerns over Bill-185 and its potential implications.

Bill-185, promoted as a measure to streamline bureaucratic processes in Ontario's housing development sector, has come under fire for its perceived negative impact on community engagement and affordable housing solutions. Speakers at the conference, including Walied Khogali Ali and Ishraq Chowdhury, warned that the bill might prioritize high-profit housing developments at the expense of affordable options.

Introduced on April 10, the legislation has sparked debate over its potential to silence community voices and undermine existing legal appeals. While proposing measures such as eliminating parking requirements and standardized pre-approved designs, critics argue that Bill-185 fails to address core issues, notably the urgent need for affordable housing.

Of particular concern is the bill's lack of support for non-market housing development and inclusionary zoning, which experts believe could enhance affordability in new housing projects. As the housing crisis continues to demand effective solutions, community advocates are calling for a re-evaluation of Bill-185 to ensure that it aligns with the needs and interests of all residents.

Walied Khogali Ali, a prominent community activist, emphasized the bill's potential to weaken community participation in housing decisions. He stated, "Bill-185 undermines the very fabric of community involvement by sidelining the voices of those most affected by housing policies. We need legislation that supports inclusive development, not one that marginalizes our communities."

For more details and to hear directly from the speakers, check out the full press conference with Walied Khogali Ali and Ishraq Chowdhury. Their insights underscore the critical need for a balanced approach to housing development that prioritizes affordability and community engagement.
