Winnipeg's Kaitlin Vitt and Hanna Picklyk Talk About Their Ukrainian Dance and Culture Podcast VSI
As the Ukrainian Capital of Canada, it is no wonder that there are many Ukrainian programs and projects going on in Winnipeg. In this episode of Community Hour, journalist Yuliia Kovalenko speaks with Kaitlin Vitt and Hannah Picklyk about their Ukrainian dance and culture podcast called VSI.
Through VSI, they explore and share Ukrainian traditions, dance, music, ethnography, and so much more. Kaitlin and Hannah both have Ukrainian roots and do their best to promote Ukrainian culture and show the world how impressive and beautiful Ukrainе is. How did their journey of exploring Ukrainian culture start, and what was the impetus for starting a podcast?
Hannah and Kaitlin are friends. They became friends when they lived in Ukraine from September 2017 to June 2018. They were there as part of a cultural immersion program put on by Cobblestone Freeway Tours. They trained with professional Ukrainian dance ensembles for two months before moving on to the next city and ensemble. They also took Ukrainian language lessons and went on excursions to learn more about Ukrainian culture and history.
Being in Ukrainian dance inspired them to learn more about Ukrainian culture, music, and traditions. While living in Ukraine, they got to connect more deeply with their culture, and since then even more of their life revolves around Ukrainian culture. Besides being a Ukrainian dancer and dance instructor, they spend lots of time learning about folklore and traditions, keeping up with news in Ukraine, writing about Ukrainian culture and my experience living in Ukraine, and sharing about Ukraine with others.
When they lived in Ukraine for a year, they felt a new, deepened connection to Ukrainian culture and Ukrainian heritage. It was a year that changed their life. They enjoy learning about ethnography of the different regions in Ukraine, folklore, and customs and traditions.
In February 2020, Hannah and Kaitlin started a podcast about Ukrainian dance and culture. It’s called Vsi. When they came back to Canada after living in Ukraine, they felt so inspired to continue learning and sharing about Ukrainian culture. The first few episodes focused mostly on Ukrainian dance and their experience training with ensembles in Ukraine. But they also have episodes where we talk with guests about music, symbolism in Ukrainian culture, and other projects inspired by Ukrainian culture.
