Locals describe what Canada Day means to them this year

A week ago, Bruce de la Cruz, reporter for TVC22, was able to go down to the streets and parks of Clarence-Rockland, to ask its residents how they were celebrating Canada Day.

The responses were mixed. Some were spending time in the park with their families, enjoying the sun and free time. Some were working, saying that they would be hanging out with friends afterwards. Others were not celebrating Canada Day at all, to stand in solidarity with the Indigenous people of Canada.

When asked what they loved about Canada, the answers were varied yet again. One lady talked about the beautiful weather that Canada has to offer, citing nature and forests as to why she loved Canada. One gentleman who is from South America, said that since they do not have the season where he is from, that winter was what he loved most about Canada. Others talked about how multiculturalism was the greatest thing about Canada, and in the same vein others talked about how Canada was a big family.

Other people were more tempered in what they had to say. One gentleman said that they were going to be thankful for all the good things that they had to say, but were going to be mindful about the bad things that have happened as well. “Canada is a great country, but it’s not a perfect one,” he says. One woman says that she loves the patriotism, and freedom that Canada offers, and that the politicians are trying their best to make it work for everyone.

All in all, this was a Canada Day that will be remembered for years to come.
