French Fry Fundraiser for Residential Schools Survivors Society
Small towns can be measured by their generosity. The tradition of helping those in need is part of the DNA of most small centres. Whenever there is need there is usually an outpouring of support. One such organization in Schreiber is the Superior Classics Car Club, a dedicated group of motoring enthusiasts who also happen to believe in giving back to their community.
When club member Mark Houston from the Golden Rail Chip stand decided that he would like to help raise money for the residential school victims, he called on his friends from the car club to show up and help promote his idea. Having a bunch of collectors cars on his parking lot would surely draw attention to the place. As the cars showed up, people began gathering to see what all the fuss was all about.
The Golden Rail had decided that every dollar spent on french fries would go directly to the Residential School Survivors Society, brought into focus recently with even more discoveries of mass graves on school grounds. Soon the parking lot was buzzing, with car fans and drivers eating up the offerings on hand. Marks wife Nancy was somewhat overwhelmed by the response but rose to the occasion filling orders and collecting donations. By the end of the day they had collected over $800 that would be donated to the cause.
The Superior Classics Car Club created quite a buzz when they arrived on site. Known for their generous donations to various causes in our community and surrounding areas to some extent.
Kim Krause from the Schreiber Media Centre got a chance to catch up with what they had been up to. The famous yearly Drag Festival was going to take on a different tone this year as with last year due to COVID restrictions being in place.
Organizing a large event like the drag race takes a lot of resources and can be quite a challenge when there is so much uncertainty going on over restrictions. As a large public event, all safety precautions need to be in place and when the decision to ban gatherings in public came about some modifications had to made. The race itself takes place over several days and attracts thousand of spectators and takes a large amount of people just to organize and execute. It is also a huge money maker and funds from this event get distributed to worthy causes throughout the year.
As Dale Riley explained the car club contributes money to various organizations such as the humane society, the regional hospital, and even distributes bursaries to students at the end of the school year.
There is another Drag Fest being planned for mid September to end off the year.
