The Township of Schreiber has just completed the first phase of an outdoor art installation consisting of paintings by local artists. The project forms part of the beautification of the downtown core but has actually extended its reach to include a few sites outside of the the centre of town.

Local artists were encouraged to submit examples of their work for consideration into the project. The artwork had to be the product of a local or former resident and highlight the area around Schreiber. Once the selection was made the original artwork had to be digitized and reproduced onto the weather proof panels. Additionally a QR code was assigned to each piece which allows the viewer to access a custom website intended to showcase the location of all the works and create a walking outdoor art gallery tour.

Future updates may include short bios of each artist and an audio component featuring the artists own words and comments. With the opening of the Tourist information centre and train museum next year, it would be certainly feasible to incorporate the mural project into the centre and increase awareness of the downtown core.

Artists have always been a big part of the culture of Schreiber and the location and geography of the town along the north shores of Lake Superior is an inspiration to all who live and visit here. In the past it has been difficult for artists to gain any exposure or even be featured as the only place that had recognized art and culture had been the library. A huge mural had been created on the side of the library building many years ago and features early settlers landing on the shore of what is now Schreiber beach. The initial phase of this programme will be studied to determine the impact both socially and economically.

Dominique Charboneau, Economic Development Officer believes that this first phase might create interesting opportunities for both artists and residents as well as adding value to the upcoming Heritage Days event in the summer of 2022.

Traditionally many past residents return home during that event and the impact of that has a spin off effect on local tourism in general.
